This is the electronic/internet version of our normal paper catalogue. Some changes have been effected so as to save file space and transfer/download time. Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need.

The sale is arranged in the following order;

    Lots 130-138 Collectables
Lots 139-315 Lots by country A-Z, excluding U.K.

    Lots 316-392 United Kingdom
If you are new to our auctions, please see our general auction information page.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success. Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post.
New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale.

General, 30 October 2006                                Page 2                                   Estimate.

                  Collections and Mixed Lots.

1     Large cardboard box with many thousands of stamps – packets, pages, stockleaves, bundles,

stockbook, etc. Quite a decent general standard with very many stamps included of medium

value (i.e. from a few pence to a pound or two each), country collections, and so on.

     Includes some covers also. þ       ..                 ..               ..                   ..               ..                £200.
2     Large box of odds, apparently gathered from numerous collections over a number of years.

We have extracted many single lots from this property, and suspect there might still be

some more finds for the observant sorter. Some, however, are obviously just cheap dup-

licates. Consists of old albums, pages, cut-up pages, many odds and loose. (1,000s) þ            £150.
3     Massive quantity of world stamps in three cartons. Most is in glassine packets, and many

are probably of 100 different stamps, although there must be other contents in some. Based

on the gross weight of the lot being over 39kg, and that one packet (of 100 diff.) weighed

4.7g, we reckon there's about 750,000 stamps here. Probably made up about 1960s. þ          £150.
4     An odd mix in carton, with a general world colln. (countries Q-S only), two folders with a

few mint blocks, m. & u. stock of Monaco in stockbook, stockbook of Turkey, printed album

of mint Austria mainly 1940s-70s, and six other mixed stockbooks. (1,000s) þ                        £140.
5     Heavy box containing sixteen stockbooks/albums, the bulk being European (some reasonable

country ranges), and within that the strongest part German. Germany includes standard

material, philatelic productions, some reprints, and some better values. (1,000s) þ £120.
6     Small box with bundle of stockcards (a few packets also) showing quite a variety of

countries and types. Generally quite interesting and with high cat. (100s) þ             ..                    85.
7     Medium box with a remainder Commonwealth M-N album, mixed world on stockcards,
s/book of W.Germany, etc., and a bundle of unsold Buy or Bid lots (s.t.c.£2,114) (100s)
þ         75.
8     Old broken suitcase with a mix of mainly old picked-over albums, often quite old contents,
and inc. one from late 19th century with a few items of postal stationery, some interesting
philatelic press-cuttings, etc. Also mixed world duplicates in packets. (1,000s)
þ 60.
9     Bulk remainder lot in two cartons. Contains two large albums with bitsy world collection,

some Hawid mounts, odds in packets, some covers/cards, etc. (1,000s) þ             ..                    45.
10     World seln. of selected items on small stockcards. Some are damaged, some are dubious,

but most have some value. Wide mix of Commonwealth and foreign countries. S.t.c. well

     over US$1,000. (but some of this wrong). (c.225)            ..                   ..               ..                    40.
11     Carton with about fifteen remainder albums (some of these just wee junior jobs) and stock-

     books. (1,000s) þ    ..                 ..                 ..               ..                   ..               ..                    40.
12     Flat box with bundle of mixed album pages and stockleaves. (100s)
þ   ..            40.
13     One album of UK and Commonwealth, and two albums of the rest of the world. A general

     spread of mainly odds. (1,000s) þ                  ..               ..                   ..               ..                    35.
14     Four different world albums in box (1,000s)
þ                 ..                   ..               ..                    35.
15     Mixed box, UK and world. Stockcards, folders, album pages, tin, cigar box, etc. (Many

     100s) þ ..                 ..                 ..                 ..               ..                   ..               ..                    35.
16     Varied world mix in stockalbum, mint and used, with a bias towards modern. Some cheap,

some of medium value, nothing seen of big value. (c.500, 35 m.s.) þ     ..            35.
17     Small box with bundle of stockcards. A wide mix of mainly medium value items. (100s) þ            30.
18     Accumulation in carton, the largest part being many thousands of off-paper world stamps

sorted by country into packets. Also two albums, and other odds. þ                      ..                    30.
19     Mix in box, the main bulk in three albums of UK “pharmaceutical FDCs” (i.e. single

values), plus mixed others inc. other covers, 1942 Polish free forces cover, a few stamps

     inc. Ireland. (100s) þ                   ..                 ..               ..                   ..               ..                    30.
20     A4 paper box stuffed with over twenty junior albums, world contents. (1,000s)
þ 24.
21     Boxfile with a bundle of stockcards, a few covers, and others. (100s)
þ                 ..                    24.
22     Carton of odds – pages, stockbook, folders, etc. Also couple of books. (1,000s)
þ 24.
23     Stamps in packets, on stockleaves, stockbooks, approval book,
some covers, etc. (1,000s) þ     24.
24     Box of world remainders. Some very common, some less usual. (1,000s)
þ           ..                    24.

slides of UK stamps and postmarks, and a few other items. þ               ..               ..                    24.

Poland, Romania, Hungary, etc., W.German bundleware (1,000s), and other European on

28     Cardboard box with many thousands of Norway, other Scandinavia (probably not Denmark),

Collections and Mixed Lots, continued.

Europe; the following 30 lots come to us from a trade customer, who, attending an auction

on the Continent, saw this as too big a bargain to miss, and bought them as one big lot, even

though he didn’t want them for stock. We offer them here as single lots, and are confident that

the vendor will see a decent profit. Each lot (of one stockbook) tends to be fairly (or very) sparse up to about early

1960s (mixed odds/sets, m.m./u.m., some used), a few earlier bits in places. They become

more complete about the mid-1960s generally in u.m. sets (probably as received as new issues)

of commems, plus defins, miniature sheets, very occasional booklets, through to 2001. Little

apparent duplication. This pattern may vary a little from country to country. The catalogue

price quoted for each lot is as it was quoted by the original vendor, priced from Michel in

     Euros.
Where used is mentioned this is usually c.t.o. in the new issue period.

In Person. This is a public auction, and bids are made in the traditional manners.
Bids by post. Please use the Bid Form supplied, and send first class.
Telephone bids will be accepted at any time before the sale (but the earlier the better). These bids should be confirmed in writing, even if the written confirmation will not reach us until after the auction. Numbers are 0131 552 1220, 0131 478 7021, or UK local rate 0845 0500 886.
A mobile number (07974 962649) can be called on the afternoon and evening of sale only.
Fax bids; no fax facility is available.
E-mail bids should be sent to us at [email protected] at any time from the moment you receive this catalogue until
3pm on the day of the auction. Please do not e-mail bids to us after that time. Please use the format and wording used on the bid form that comes with your auction catalogue. (We have a back-up email address of [email protected] in case of problems.)
We normally confirm receipt of email bids within 24 hours (not on the Sunday before the auction,
and usually within one hour on the auction day)

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Maestro and Delta. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit card instructions.
If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by credit card, and to have the lots posted.
We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Maestro and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

VIEWING
; please note that lots can normally be viewed in our shop during the one week prior to the auction. It is sometimes possible to view auction lots outside the normal times, but this must be by special arrangement.

A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.

(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy (colour copies A4 pages; 1st copy £1, 50p per page thereafter), plus postage.)

Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131 551 2331 (mobile 07974 962649).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
Any invoices remaining unpaid fourteen days from the auction date (or after delivery to a postal buyer) will attract interest at the rate of 2% per month or part thereof.
