This is the electronic/fax/internet version of our normal paper catalogue. Some changes have been effected so as to save file space and transfer/download time. Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need. (The first few lots have been tidied up to nearer their original style just to give you a better impression.)

The sale is arranged in the following order;
Lots 1-102 Collections and Mixed Lots
    Lots 103-127 Literature and Supplies
Lots     Non-Philatelic Items [link to Collectables Auction]

    Lots 395-468 United Kingdom
If you are new to our auctions, please see our general auction information page.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success. Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/fax/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by fax, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, fax, or post.
New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale.

Collections and Mixed Lots.
                                                                                                                        Estimate (pounds sterling)

1     Not an enormous box, but a nice mixture. Loose stamps, pages, packets, stockcards, etc.
with a very varied range of world stamps, early to modern, mint and used, one-offs or very
duplicated, countries popular and unpopular; all in all a very diverse lot with good pickings
throughout. Includes scarce and unusual stamps and oddities. (1,000s)      ..          ..        ..        £150.
2     Medium box with quite a reasonable grade of mix. Little is very common, and there are
earlier or more unusual stamps scattered throughout, as well as numerous covers. All-world
coverage inc. countries not often seen, and with many USA and Germany noticed. Good lot
      for collector or dealer. (1,000s)        ..        ..       ..       ..        ..         .         ..         ..         ..           £120.
3 Carton with fifteen various stockbooks and albums, plus some leaves. Much is duplicated
used stock, and inc. Belgium, Bohemia & Moravia/Czechoslovakia, Finland, France,
Germany, Poland, Sweden, UK, UN, USA, sports, as well as general world. (1,000s)    ..          £100.
4 Stockbook with a mixed m. & u. range of various countries inc. Lithuania, India, French and

5 Good quality mix in box. Some cheaper items in bulk, but many useful stamps and covers
from quite a good range of countries (inc. much USA). Well worth inspection (or, at estimate,
      well worth taking a gamble blind). (100s)         ..         ..         ..        ..         ..         ..        ..               50.
6 A large and heavy world accumulation in 18 various albums (some of these good printed
albums) and stockbooks. All world, though with much Europe noticed.       ..       ..       ..               50.
7 Small seln. on a few stockcards, generally with high catalogue prices, with Brasil, Fiume,

8 Two wine boxes with two nearly empty old Scott International Junior albums, plus six fairly
well-filled springback albums. Fairly standard ranges, from all areas of the world. (1,000s) 40.
9 Interesting mix in shoebox. Includes a few used postcards of Budapest and Sofia, covers from Den-
mark, India, Madagascar and S.Africa charged postage due in UK, a few KUT KG5 mint high values
stuck together, some India and other Commonwealth covers, some mint Hungary (cat.£80+ ?), etc. 40.

early 1900s. Wide range of countries inc. many European Colonies. (100s) .. 32.
11 Shoebox well-filled by about 800g net weight of world kiloware. Certainly not a normal mix,
with much 1920s-60s inc. many Bermuda, some higher values seen and other less usual
  material. (1,000s) .. .. .. .. .. .. 30.
12 Three stockbooks of world stamps, all mint, inc. France, Canada, Netherlands, USA, some
  Latin America, China, and others. (100s) .. .. .. .. 30.
13 All-world accumulation in medium box with on/off-paper in packets etc., a few Brunei
1970s FDCs, Denmark 1980 year pack, a few postal stationery items, other covers, and some
  1950s/60s kiloware etc., etc. Interesting mix. .. .. .. .. 30.
14 Carton with an odd world mix – some areas probably missing, some common material
present, as well as others less common. Inc. some Poland mint blocks, a folder of Austria,
  duplicated cheap USA, etc. (1,000s) .. .. .. .. 30.
 15 Carton with all-world m. & u. accumulation on album pages (a few with m.m. KG6 to 1/-),

  60% Commonwealth). Some mint, but mostly used (few 1,000s) .. .. 26.
18 World collection in three Simplex Medium and two other albums, generally up to about
  1960s only. (Many 100s) .. .. .. .. .. 24.

WEBSITE and EMAILS; We had very serious problems last month, due to some dreadful treatment at
the hands of a USA-based company. Please change your records to show our website as www.stamp-shop.com and our email as [email protected] (note hyphen, and “.com” instead of “.net”)

In addition to the “hammer price”, buyers pay a 10% premium, and postal customers are charged postage
at cost. There is no extra handling charge per lot or per invoice, nor is v.a.t. added to any prices.

A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (vat-inclusive) will be added to all sale prices.

THE AUCTION VENUE is 700 yards West of our Shop, on Ferry Road. It has its own car park.
The bar (upstairs) is open 6-10pm and also serves a variety of food, teas and coffees. Please note that
we do not allow drinks at the viewing tables, but you are welcome to bring drinks down from the bar
once the auction has started.

Coming to the auction ?
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - you can bring things along for sale on the night. We charge 25p per
lot entry fee, and 10% commission on sales. (1% optional insurance) (larger lots are charged £1 entry fee
if handed in at our shop, but the normal 25p if entered on the evening of the sale)
All sorts of things sell well - single stamps, sets, country collections, empty albums, mixed boxes,
and so on. If you have a number of lots to enter you can pick up a supply of forms from the shop in
advance.

The new Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth “2003” Catalogue is expected into stock at any moment.
This will be in a new style, listing only stamps of the period 1840 to 1952, and will be in one volume, priced at £39.95
We are uncertain as to what will be used to cover the later years, but will advise when any definite information comes to hand.

Bid Steps are published later in this catalogue, and our notes ask that people use these increments. However, perhaps about 20% of bids submitted by customers are not according to these steps. Any such bids are adjusted downwards to the next normal step. If you want to maximise your chances, please make sure that your bids match ours. Thanks !

* If you find time is tight to get bids posted in time, we are happy to accept bids by telephone, fax or email. Please always use first class post for sending bids.
* * The notes on the reverse of the Bid Form form part of our terms of business - please read from time
to time. Explanations of our terms, principles, practices, etc. can be had simply by asking at any time.

€uro Currency; We are now happy to accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We display our rate beside the counter. We normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the time of writing, the market rate is 0.6332, so we are allowing 63p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for auction lots in Euros (banknotes).
We cannot yet take auction bids or postal payments in Euros.

IMPORTANT INTERNET INFO !

website
Our previous stampshop.net website has closed, due to dreadful treatment by USA-based Verio/Network Solutions (which may come as little surprise to those who know much about them - they failed to follow the instruction to transfer the registration to a UK registrar, shut down the site, and then tranferred the name to a third party !).
Our main website is now based at www.stamp-shop.com (note the hyphen, and .com rather than .net). Please be patient with us while we fix odd links etc.

emails
Emails should now be sent to [email protected]. We have a  back-up address of  [email protected]
in case of problems.
We confirm the receipt of email bids within 24 hours of receipt (usually sooner, but not normally on the Sunday)

Especially in the mixed lots, alternative bids, and/or spending limits, can be very useful to the bidder
who cannot attend. Please feel free to ask for advice – using this option might get you a lot or two
you would have missed out on otherwise.

E-mail bids should be sent to us at [email protected] at any time from the moment you receive this catalogue until 3pm on Monday 4 November. Please do not e-mail bids to us after that time. Please use the format and wording used on the bid form that comes with your auction
catalogue. (Please do not use the normal address, which has a temporary problem .)

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Switch and Delta. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit card instructions. If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by credit card, and to have the lots posted.

We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Switch and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next stamp auction will be on 9 December.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available
 if requested).
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 90p per lot + £4.25 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £4 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £4 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are EEC countries £4, other European countries £5, Overseas £8.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 or  0131.552 1515. On the evening of the sale only you can use our mobile telephone number 07974 962649 (at other times it is very seldom switched on, and we do not collect text messages or respond to "missed calls" on our mobile).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
