After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

300     Papua; an extensive and important group of covers, the largest part of which is from Madiri, Daru, to England.
These covers until recently contained their original letters, but the correspondence itself is being kept by the family. We have however had sight of this correspondence, and can confirm that the majority originated in Madiri, Fly River, Daru. We have copies of some sample letterheads which can be inspected.

The lot can be divided into four periods or groups as follows;

{1} 1906-1911. The first group of fifty covers all bear Queensland Queen Victoria adhesives (mainly 2d, or two of 1d, some a single 1d). The majority of these are cancelled with the Thursday Island 336 numeral, or the Thursday Island c.d.s., and most are to England. Included are two of 1908 to South Africa each with a large handstruck 1D, another of 1908 with Sydney c.d.s. cancel and PAQUEBOT to side. Three (1909 and 1911) are from T.I. to Daru with Daru backstamps. We are confident that nearly all of these came from Daru or Badu.
{2} 1911-1941 Bundle of 123 covers franked with Papuan adhesives largest number in 1910s, slightly fewer in 1920s and 1930s, only three in 1940-41. Nearly everything is cancelled by the Daru c.d.s., almost all are addressed to England, and most have transit marks (Thursday Island, Australian, Hong Kong, etc.). Included are nine covers with WW1 censor marks (5 violet straight-line, 1 red Brisbane circular, 3 double circle
PASSED BY CENSOR/THURSDAY ISLAND dated August and September 1918, January 1919), four with the Daru c.d.s. in violet (and a few in blue or blue-black), 1930 with 2 x Lakatoi 1d cancelled Brisbane with LOOSE/SHIP/LETTER to side, and four WW2 censors. In later years several have postmarks other than Daru.
{3} 1914-1917 seven covers with Australian adhesives cancelled at Thursday Island (and one redirected to Papua via T.I.). Of these, four are censored (two with only a manuscript endorsement, one with straight-line mark, one with manuscript resealed using newspaper).
{4} 1928 (1) and 1933-1939 (15) Australian adhesives on cover with Thursday Island c.d.s. cancels.
Also included in the lot are a few further Australian covers, but which do not appear to have Papua or Thursday Island connections.

Condition is mixed, very much as would be expected for letters which have been transported around the world, then eagerly opened (without a view to future collectability), then stored in bundles with letters enclosed. Some therefore are very fine, most are quite decent though showing a bit of wear, and some have faults such as flaps missing, or very rough opening, or even parts missing. The majority however are in perfectly acceptable condition.
Further information can be had on our website where there is an Excel spreadsheet (
giving details of dates and postmarks etc.) of all the covers in goup {1} - follow this linkIllustrations of some covers at this link (large file size.)
Our estimate can be little more than a stab in the dark. This is very much a lot where the price will be decided by the bidders at auction.

THE END OF THE SALE

A Buyers Premium of 10% (vat-inclusive) will be added to all sale prices.

0845 0500 886   Use this number to make bids or to check on prices after the auction or any time you want to speak to us from anywhere in the UK for the cost of a local rate phone call.

uro Currency; We are happy to accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We display our rate beside the counter. We normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the time of writing, the market rate is 0.907, so we are allowing 90p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for auction lots in Euro banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We also accept payments in our shop in Euros, and we buy the old legacy currencies, as well as other coins and notes.

Most auctions include a few lots which, due to their large size or weight compared to value, will not be taken to the auction venue. They must therefore be viewed at our shop during the previous week, and successful purchasers will be responsible for their collection from us. The symbol for these is , and very generally speaking, there's a cut-off point of about 2 or 3 estimate per kilo weight.
If you attend the auction and buy any of these lots, you can either call at the shop during normal opening hours, or it is sometimes possible to arrange to pick up after the auction has finished (though please first speak to Mr. Murray to arrange this).

NORMAL BIDDING STEPS
We list here our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of help to bidders who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit our normal pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as much as possible, but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to 20, bids are in 1 steps.                From 20 to 30, bids are in 2 steps.
>From 30 to 50, bids are in 2 or 3 steps (i.e. 30, 32, 35, 38, 40, 42, 45, 48, 50).
>From 50 to 100 in 5 steps.                           From 100 to 200, bids are in 10 steps.
>From 200 to 300, bids are in 20 steps.
>From 300 to 500, bids are in 20 or 30, and above this in 5% to 10% steps.

Bids by post. Please use the Bid Form supplied, and send first class.
Telephone bids will be accepted at any time before the sale (but the earlier the better). These bids should be confirmed in writing, even if the written confirmation will not reach us until after the auction. Numbers are 0131 552 1220, 0131 478 7021, or UK local rate 0845 0500 886.
A mobile number (07974 962649) can be called on the afternoon and evening of sale only.
Fax bids; no fax facility is available.
E-mail bids should be sent to us at [email protected] at any time from the moment you receive this catalogue until

and usually within one hour on the auction day)

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Maestro and Delta. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit card instructions.
If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by credit card, and to have the lots posted.
We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Maestro and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

VIEWING
; please note that lots can normally be viewed in our shop during the one week prior to the auction. It is sometimes possible to view auction lots outside the normal times, but this must be by special arrangement.

Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).

Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
Any invoices remaining unpaid fourteen days from the auction date (or after delivery to a postal buyer) will attract interest at the rate of 2% per month or part thereof.
