After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/fax/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by fax, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

General, 24 March 2003  Page 14    Estimate.

318 New Zealand; Antarctic; 1904-1912 quite a remarkable postcard, having postal connections
with three different expeditions. The card is a picture postcard, the front having on the left half
printed photographs of the officers and crew of presumably the relief ship Morning.
The card is addressed to J.J. Kinsey at Christchurch (who was New Zealand agent for Scott and
for Shackleton), and is signed at lower left of address side “W. Colbeck” (Lt. William Colbeck
RNR was commander of the Morning [previously a Norwegian vessel called Morgenen]).
  Stamps and postmarks are as follows, chronologically;
{1} NZ 1d Universal (booklet stamp) cancelled LYTTLETON/1 AP 04. [This is the date that
Discovery, accompanied by Terra Nova and Morning, returned to NZ from Scott’s 1901-4
  expedition, arriving at Lyttleton harbour.]
{2} NZ 1d with King Edward VII/Land overprint, cancelled BRIT. ANTARCTIC EXPD./NZ/2.30PM/
MR 4/09. [4 March is the date that the shore party returned to the Nimrod during Shackleton’s
1907-9 expedition, was the official closing date of the post office at Hut Point, and the day
that Nimrod left McMurdo Sound for NZ.]
{3} NZ 1d with VICTORIA/LAND overprint (showing the “raised ‘IA’” variety), cancelled BRIT.
ANTARCTIC EXPD./NZ/10.45PM/9 FE/11. [This date is that of the first mail from the ill-fated Scott
1911-12 Terra Nova expedition, despatched from Cape Evans on the Terra Nova.]
  {4} NZ 1d with VICTORIA/LAND overprint, cancelled BRIT. ANTARCTIC EXPD./NZ/3.15PM/31 JA/12.
[This date is only seen on mail addressed to Kinsey. There has been doubt for many years as to
whether mail with this date of cancel was properly carried through the polar mails, or may
have been pre- or post-dated. Also Capt. Scott’s 1911-12 Terra Nova expedition.]
We are as certain as we can be that this item was carried back from the first expedition, mail
from which is particularly scarce. The chances are that the postcard revisited the Antarctic on
one or both of the later expeditions, although Kinsey was responsible for numerous items of
philatelic inspiration (it was Kinsey's suggestion that the special stamps were arranged for the
  later expeditions). Our tendency is to believe that {3} was probably proper use, but that {4}
  was probably by favour.
Fine but for minor faults, as to be expected. [view image] .. ..                   £400. to £700.
 *** --; for other Antarctic material, see Non-Philatelic (Postcards), and U.S.A. (Lots 116, 372, 373)

Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 90p per lot + £4.25 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £4 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £4 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are EEC countries £4, other European countries £5, Overseas £8.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 or  0131.552 1515. On the evening of the sale only you can use our mobile telephone number 07974 962649 (at other times it is very seldom switched on, and we do not collect text messages or respond to "missed calls" on our mobile).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
