Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need. (The first few lots have been tidied up to nearer their original style just to give you a better impression.)

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/fax/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by fax, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, fax, or post.

Collections and Mixed Lots.

1     Large accumulation of very mixed material in two cartons. A mix of loose stamps, some
sorted, remainder albums, some covers, and so on. Apparently collected abroad, so not the
UK-bias normally seen. In one packet we notice a poor UK 1d black, and a spacefiller
Japan 1916 Hirohito 10s (cat.£800. but badly damaged), but many other finds possible.
      (10,000s) þ       ..      ..      ..      ..      ..      ..         ..        ..        ..       ..        ..        ..        ..         ..        £150.
2    Stockbook of earlier mint stamps, up to about 1900, of Denmark (6), Germany (5), Ceylon
      (17), Spain (8), Italy (17), Portugal (11), Straits (11), B.C.A. (7), C.E.F. on India (15),
Gibraltar (13), Russian POs in China (14), and a few others. Total stated to catalogue
      £1,200+ þ       ..      ..      ..      ..      ..      ..        ..        ..        ..         ..        ..        ..         ..         ..        £120.
3     Old and tatty Scott’s International album with an extensive world collection – strength in
foreign and with little after about 1930s. Not noted for high value, but good spreads of some
      overseas countries. (1,000s) þ        ..         ..        ..        ..        ..          ..         ..         ..          ..            80.
4 Carton filled with hundreds of envelopes, these mainly with sorted world off-paper. Mostly
European seen, with much Netherlands, Norway and Canada at first dig. (10,000s) þ      ..            75.
5 Fine mix in carton – in several medium stockbooks, on pages, stockcards, packets, etc. Wide
range, much foreign, little of the very cheapest – much saleable material. (1,000s) þ       ..            75.
6 A generally badly arranged world accumulation in 15 medium to large stockbooks. (Many
      1,000s) þ           ..        ..         ..         ..         ..         ..        ..        ..         ..         ..             ..                   65.
7 Carton with three stockbooks (untidy world mix), mixed material on pages and in packets/
folders (inc. world airmails/aviation theme, Yugoslavia, Germany) inc. many of medium
      value. Interesting mix. (1,000s) þ       ..       ..         ..         ..        ..        ..         ..         ..         ..          60.
8 Albums or stockbooks of UK, Faroes, Germany, Norway, Spain, and mixed countries. Also
other loose odds inc. approval books of mint Denmark. (100s) þ                ..             ..            ..          55.
9 Very large bundle of mixed album pages and stockleaves, c.23cm thick. Wide mix with
  much foreign. (1,000s) þ .. .. .. .. .. 50.
10 Carton stacked with loose stamps, little boxes, stockbooks, etc., etc. World mix with some
  bias to Scandinavia. (10,000s) þ .. .. .. .. .. 50.
11 Carton with Czechoslovakia in 2 stockbooks, Switzerland in 3 stockalbums (useful range
with better, many mint, many sets), some old bundleware, and others. (1,000s) þ 50.
12 The vendor of this carton told us it was “a right guddle” and we agree, as well as feeling
  disinclined to tidy it. Best of luck ! (1,000s) þ .. .. .. 50.
13 Surprisingly, this box from the same vendor had a note inside – “another right guddle”.
However, our gut feeling is that this, although every bit as guddly, is maybe less useful.
  (1,000s) þ .. .. .. .. .. .. 30.

We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Switch and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

VIEWING; please note that lots can normally be viewed in our shop during the one week prior to the auction. It is sometimes possible to view auction lots outside the normal times, but this must be by special arrangement.

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next stamp auction is on Monday 23 February 2004.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available
 if requested).
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 90p per lot + £4.25 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy (colour copies A4 pages; 1st copy £1, 50p per page thereafter), plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £4 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £4 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are EEC countries £4, other European countries £5, Overseas £8.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 or  0131.552 1515. On the evening of the sale only you can use our mobile telephone number 07974 962649 (at other times it is very seldom switched on, and we do not collect text messages or respond to "missed calls" on our mobile).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
