FROM THIS AUCTION

This is the electronic/fax/internet version of our normal paper catalogue. Some changes have been effected so as to save file space and transfer/download time. Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need. (The first few lots have been tidied up to nearer their original style just to give you a better impression.)

The sale is arranged in the following order;
Lots 1-88 Collections and Mixed Lots
    Lots 89-103 Literature and Supplies
    Lots 104-127 Non-Philatelic Items
Lots 128-345 Lots by country A-Z, excluding U.K.
    Lots 346-463United Kingdom
If you are new to our auctions, please see our general auction information page.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success. Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/fax/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by fax, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, fax, or post.
New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale.
AUCTION VIEWING – NEW ARRANGEMENTS
Viewing on the day of the auction is now available for a longer period. From 3pm on Monday 9 December it will be possible to view the larger lots at the auction venue. These will be all of the boxes, albums, and other bulky lots such as bundles and bags. All such lots are marked in this catalogue with a § symbol, and they will be on view at Stewart’s-Melville Club Pavilion from 3pm until 6.50pm. All other smaller lots (single stamps on display cards, and envelopes containing covers, pages, etc.) will be on view from 5pm (30 minutes earlier than previously).
In conjunction with this enhancement of viewing facilities, we have arranged for the club bar to open one hour earlier, at 5pm (for hot and cold drinks, and snacks).
This change will be effective for all future auctions, subject only to any adjustments we make in the light of experience.
The “Buy or Bid Sale” will also now start at 5.00pm.

                                                                                                                        Estimate (pounds sterling)

  JANUARY SALES ?
Regular visitors to our shop will know that, at times, we have rather an overwhelming number
of boxes. The next nine lots are our own property, and represent a considerable clearance.
Generally, the bulk of the material is of lower to medium quality, having usually had a first
look over in order to remove any useful stock. However, our first look often also removes
“junk” and bulk. Much is worthy of further, closer investigation.

1     Big bundle (25cm+ deep) of very assorted album pages. Excellent material for dealer’s priced
pages, or for packet book maker, or collector with catholic interests. Good numbers of med-
ium value stamps (many cat. pounds each). Much of the bulk is, of course, common, but this
lot is certainly worth spending more than a few minutes viewing. Largest numbers are of
Commonwealth and UK, but with many Europe and Overseas also. (Many 1,000s) §           ..         ..         ..       £300.
2     Vaguely similar bundle of album leaves (c.18cm deep), with less obvious value, and with
higher proportion of Overseas and other foreign, though still with many Commonwealth
  and Foreign. (1,000s) § ..         ..         ..         ..         ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          ..           £100.
3     Shirt box – looks like we filled this with mainly material retained for pricing or sorting, put
it aside about the mid-1980s, and obviously never found the time. General decent standard
  – many, many picking, world-wide. (1,000s) § ..         ..         ..         ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          £100.
4     Very varied mix in solid old case – the whole gamut from cheap rubbish and old articles
through to good pickings – wide range of type/area/age. Much on leaves, others in packets,
  a few covers, etc. Again many pickings. (1,000s) § ..         ..        ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          ..            £100.
5     General accumulation in carton – several mixed albums, various album pages, many loose/
in packets, four club books of France, small quantity of covers/cards, etc. A few better here
and there, and much of moderate value – very little bulk or heavily duplicated material – a
  week could be well spent picking over this box. (1,000s) § ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          ..         ..             60.
6     Carton with album pages, stamps loose and in packets, a carrier bag of world covers, and
general odds. Some is utter rubbish, others have been picked out of other lots and retained
  as being better and/or of interest. (1,000s) § ..         ..         ..         ..         ..          ..            ..           ..          ..           45.
7     Carton with album, loose stamps in packets, some UK FDCs and other covers, world on
pages (some slightly better), some kiloware (UK and foreign), a scattering of sets, a few 1893
  maps (remains of large atlas). Some rubbish, some a good quality sort. (1,000s) § ..          ..          ..          ..         40.
8     Bundle of album pages – much UK QE, plus opts. on GB, some Commonwealth in Europe,
  Omnibus issues 1930s-50s, etc., and other world. (Many 100s) § ..         ..          ..          ..          ..          ..             20.
9     Two small boxes of mixed world inc. some dupl. QE N.Borneo, 3 x Bahamas KG6 £1 fis-
  cally used, UK 1935 S.Jubilee 2½d u.m. eight-block, and assorted cheaper. (100s) § ..          ..          ..                15.

Especially in the mixed lots, alternative bids, and/or spending limits, can be very useful to the bidder
who cannot attend. Please feel free to ask for advice – using this option might get you a lot or two
you would have missed out on otherwise.

THE END OF THE SALE

© Robert Murray 2003

A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (vat-inclusive) will be added to all sale prices.

THE AUCTION VENUE is 650 yards West of our Shop, on Ferry Road. It has its own car park.
The bar (upstairs) is open 5-10pm and also serves a variety of food, teas and coffees. Please note that
we do not allow drinks at the viewing tables, but you are welcome to bring drinks down from the bar
once the auction has started.

Coming to the auction §
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - you can bring things along for sale on the night. We charge 25p per
lot entry fee, and 10% commission on sales. (1% optional insurance) (larger lots are charged £1 entry fee
if handed in at our shop, but the normal 25p if entered on the evening of the sale)
All sorts of things sell well - single stamps, sets, country collections, empty albums, mixed boxes,
and so on. If you have a number of lots to enter you can pick up a supply of forms from the shop in
advance.

Bid Steps are published later in this catalogue, and our notes ask that people use these increments. However, perhaps about 20% of bids submitted by customers are not according to these steps. Any such bids are adjusted downwards to the next normal step. If you want to maximise your chances, please make sure that your bids match ours. Thanks !

* If you find time is tight to get bids posted in time, we are happy to accept bids by telephone, fax or email. Please always use first class post for sending bids.
* * The notes on the reverse of the Bid Form form part of our terms of business - please read from time
to time. Explanations of our terms, principles, practices, etc. can be had simply by asking at any time.

€uro Currency; We are now happy to accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We display our rate beside the counter. We normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the time of writing, the market rate is 0.6572, so we are allowing 65p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for auction lots in Euros (banknotes).
We cannot yet take auction bids or postal payments in Euros.

Especially in the mixed lots, alternative bids, and/or spending limits, can be very useful to the bidder
who cannot attend. Please feel free to ask for advice – using this option might get you a lot or two
you would have missed out on otherwise.

THIS IS HOW YOU CAN BID;
In Person. This is a public auction, and bids are made in the traditional manners.
Bids by post. Please use the Bid Form supplied, and send first class.
Telephone bids will be accepted at any time before the sale (but the earlier the better). These bids should be confirmed in writing, even if the written confirmation will not reach us until after the auction. A mobile number (07974 962649) can be called on the evening of the sale only.
Fax bids should be sent to us on 0131.478 7021. Please use the bid form that comes with your auction catalogue. Our machine will be operative during our stated opening hours from now until the date of the sale. As well as this, it will operate 24-hours from 10am on Saturday 18 January until 3pm on Monday 20 January. Please do not fax bids to us after that time.
E-mail bids should be sent to us at [email protected] at any time from the moment you receive this catalogue until 3pm on Monday 20 January. Please do not e-mail bids to us after that time. Please use the format and wording used on the bid form that comes with your auction
catalogue. (Please do not use the normal address, which has a temporary problem .)

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Switch and Delta. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit card instructions. If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by credit card, and to have the lots posted.

We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Switch and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next stamp auction will be on 24 February 2003.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available
 if requested).
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 90p per lot + £4.25 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £4 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £4 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are EEC countries £4, other European countries £5, Overseas £8.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 or  0131.552 1515. On the evening of the sale only you can use our mobile telephone number 07974 962649 (at other times it is very seldom switched on, and we do not collect text messages or respond to "missed calls" on our mobile).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
