transfer/download time. Most illustrations and logos for
example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest
form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the
information you need.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success (and are not normally sold at less than about two-thirds of estimate). Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.
After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.
This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.
NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post. New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale. |

353 Scottish Covers
and Postal History; 1879 cover
from the Tay Bridge Disaster of the evening of 28

Cover with
penny red plate 213 cancelled by London EC duplex mark (DE
27) stamp has
become
detached and has been replaced in slightly incorrect
position addressed to Messrs/
James
Keillor & Son/Dundee, with company stamp to left ROBERT MAC ANDREW & CO/
LONDON. Manuscript note at upper-left
of envelope reads (In the train that
fell/with the

Unusually, the lower-right corner of the back of
the envelope shows a mark where another
stamp has been
against it, and (reading in reverse) a Charleroi (Belgium)
cancel of 26 Dec.
Presumably,
some effect of sea water, or pressure, or drying, caused
this ink transfer.
This cover has
no provenance other than its own physical evidence. We
have no reason to
doubt the fact
that this is in fact a Tay Bridge Disaster cover. It is
understood that two bags
of mail were
washed up from the wreck, and that perhaps only about ten
items are known
to presently
survive.
Various
faults, as would be expected, but none that spoil the
attraction of the item. :

bids or to check on prices after the auction or any time you
want to speak to us from anywhere in the UK for the cost of a
local rate phone call.
uro Currency; We are happy to accept
Euro cash payments in our shop. We normally allow the market
rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the
time of writing, the market rate is 0.8355, so we are allowing
83p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give
you). You can also pay for lots in this auction by Euro
banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We
also accept payments in our shop in Euros, and we buy the old legacy
currencies, as well as other coins and notes.
MATERIAL IS ACCEPTED FOR FUTURE SALES AT ANY TIME
Most auctions include a
few lots which, due to their large size or weight compared to
value, will not be taken to the auction venue. They must
therefore be viewed at our shop during the previous week, and
successful purchasers will be responsible for their collection
from us. The symbol for these is , and very generally
speaking, there's a cut-off point of about 2 or 3 estimate
per kilo weight.
If you attend the auction and buy any of these lots, you can
either call at the shop during normal opening hours, or it is
sometimes possible to arrange to pick up after the auction has
finished (though please first speak to Mr. Murray to arrange
this).
NORMAL BIDDING STEPS
We list here
our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of help
to bidders who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit
our normal pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as
much as possible, but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to 20, bids are in 1 steps.
From 20 to 30, bids are in 2 steps.
>From 30 to 50, bids are in 2 or 3 steps (i.e. 30,
32, 35, 38, 40, 42, 45, 48, 50).
>From 50 to 100 in 5 steps.
From 100 to 200,
bids are in 10 steps.
>From 200 to 300, bids are in 20 steps.
>From 300 to 500, bids are in 20 or 30, and above this
in 5% to 10% steps.

a list of abbreviations and symbols used is from time to

by Maestro and Delta. This facility can be used by room
purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other
local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by
postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been
designed to make space for credit card instructions.

posting receipt slip.
VIEWING; please note that lots can normally be viewed in our

sometimes possible to view auction lots outside the normal times,
