This is the electronic/internet version of our normal paper catalogue. Some changes have been effected so as to save file space and transfer/download time.     Lots 155-281 Collectables
Lots 282-349 Stamps Collections and Mixed Lots

If you are new to our auctions, please see our general auction information page.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success (and are not normally sold at less than about two-thirds of estimate). Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post.
New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale.

Malcolm Cant Collection, 10 December 2012 Page 2 Estimate.

STARTING AT 5.00pm (in Upstairs Bar Area)

The Malcolm Cant Collection of Edinburgh.
Malcolm Cant published many books on Edinburgh in the 1980s to 2000s, popular and well-regarded by historians and locals. During the period he was actively writing and publishing, he amassed an extensive collection of material; some for reference, some for illustration, and others for use while giving illustrated talks. Having retired from publishing, he has decided to dispose of this collection, and it appears here suitably lotted by type and area.
While cataloguing this collection it was apparent that there was a different feel to it, compared to other collections we have seen. What I eventually realised was that this is not material put together by a typical collector (who will often for example add a postcard to their album simply because they dont already have just that card). The difference is very obvious; it is the collection of a historian and publisher, generally adding cards because they show something different, something new.
Note that there are a few items from outside Edinburgh, but they are included here out of convenience. Prices of many of these lots are unpredictable. It is quite possible that some lots here and there will sell well above their estimates; some might also be picked up below estimate (note that we do not normally entertain bids at less than two-thirds of the estimate).
We make no assertions regarding copyright of any of the items sold. Any buyers wishing to reproduce any illustrations must satisfy themselves as to the copyright status.
Note that any lots with the
symbol will not be taken to the auction venue. These are generally the heavier or more fragile lots. These need to be viewed at our shop during the preceding week, and buyers will have to collect any lots so marked from our shop.

SLIDES
Malcolm Cant built up an enormous collection of over five thousand slides, which were mainly used when he was giving talks and presentations at local groups. The slides cover quite a mix of types some are quite modern photographs, some are of postcards or photographs which appear elsewhere in this collection, others are photographs of prints etc.
We do not reckon on there being great value in this section, but are keen that people with specific interests are able to buy suitable sections. We will therefore allow customers to bid on any sections of interest, with a starting price of the bid step nearest to 10p per slide (subject to a further minimum of 5 per lot). (So for example Cramond would start at 16, Festival at 5, Morningside at 20.) After any such individual sections have been removed, the whole remaining collection of slides will be sold as one lot.
Anybody wishing to bid for any of the sections listed on the next page
must notify us before the auction starts. Note also that this group will not be taken to the auction venue.

POSTCARDS
The following lots are all of postcards arranged in plastic four-pocket pages, and presented by area. The majority of cards are of the classic era (c.1900 to 1930s) but with some more modern in places. Also the condition tends to be fine throughout (mixed unused and used), but with odd damage here and there. If any lot has a higher percentage of modern cards, or of damaged cards, this will be noted. There is just occasional light duplication. There are many cards included here that we have not seen in some decades of handling postcards.
NB we use RP (real photographic) in its proper definition of postcards printed directly from a negative onto postcard-backed photographic paper (rather than it increasingly used or abused meaning of from a photograph).

THE END OF THE SALE
 Robert Murray 2012

A Buyers Premium of 10% (vat-inclusive) will be added to all sale prices.

0845 0500 886   Use this number to make bids or to check on prices after the auction or any time you want to speak to us from anywhere in the UK for the cost of a local rate phone call.

uro Currency; We are happy to accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the time of writing, the market rate is 0.8111, so we are allowing 81p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for lots in this auction by Euro banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We also accept payments in our shop in Euros, and we buy the old legacy currencies, as well as other coins and notes.

MATERIAL IS ACCEPTED FOR FUTURE SALES AT ANY TIME
Bidding by post ? Please only fill in the credit card box on the bid form if you want your purchases
posted to you. Credit/debit cards are only an option you can also be billed and pay by cheque.

the night. We charge 25p per lot entry fee, and 10% commission on sales (1% optional insurance).
Telephone bids are welcome, and should be confirmed in writing.
You may make alternative bids, or state an overall spending limit. Advice available.

Most auctions include a few lots which, due to their large size or weight compared to value, will not be taken to the auction venue. They must therefore be viewed at our shop during the previous week, and successful purchasers will be responsible for their collection from us. The symbol for these is , and very generally speaking, there's a cut-off point of about 2 or 3 estimate per kilo weight.
If you attend the auction and buy any of these lots, you can either call at the shop during normal opening hours, or it is sometimes possible to arrange to pick up after the auction has finished (though please first speak to Mr. Murray to arrange this).

NORMAL BIDDING STEPS
We list here our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of help to bidders who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit our normal pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as much as possible, but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to 20, bids are in 1 steps.                From 20 to 30, bids are in 2 steps.

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next auction (Stamps) is planned for 4 February 2013.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available if requested).
A Buyers Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 1.20 per lot + 5.50 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request. Minimum charge 12 per vendor in one auction (10 plus vat).
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy (colour copies A4 pages; 1st copy 50p, 30p per page thereafter), plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at whats on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged 1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently 9 for inland UK addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us 7 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are Europe 12, overseas 15.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewarts-Melville Pavilion is  0131 551 2331 (mobile 07974 962649).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
Any invoices remaining unpaid fourteen days from the auction date (or after delivery to a postal buyer) will attract interest at the rate of 2% per month or part thereof.
