This is an archive copy of a past auction catalogue. Many people find them useful for finding references to specialist items, or to research prices. Prices realised can normally be found in the "Word" version of the subsequent catalogue. Current and forthcoming auctions are listed at www.stamp-shop.com/stamp-auctions.html. (Everything in this auction will have been sold. Nothing will still be available for sale, although similar material might appear in future auctions.) |

the
easiest

information you
need.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success. Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.
After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.
This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.
NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post. New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale. |

Please note that this auction
starts at lot 187, lots 1-186 being the UK Specialised
auction which
precedes
it at 5pm. One bid form can be used for either or both
sales. (That
sale will
start at 5pm in the bar area upstairs, allowing viewing for
the General
Sale to
carry on in the main room on the ground floor. This of
course means
that Mr.
Murray will be even busier than usual, and should you need
to speak to
him,
that should be done as much before 5pm as possible.)

Collections and
Mixed Lots,
continued.
 The
following
group of 70 lots
represents one very
extensive
world
collection (83
volumes !) now offered
for
sale in sections. The whole collection is an old-fashioned
yet
up-to-date
general range of all countries, with the straightforward
approach of
trying to
get as many different
stamps as possible in this case about 80,000 different. By
far the
largest
numbers are commoner and cheaper stamps, with the majority
used, but as
the
collector was in the habit of buying auction box lots
and mixtures, occasional finds are possible. Stamps are
mounted with
hinges,
laid out onto A4 graph
paper in A4 binders, usually written-up and in date order.
Occasional
duplication appears to be usually shades, or mint/used,
etc., sometimes
multiples. Quantities quoted are as noted in the albums, and
appear to be correct. The first run of lots is of individual
countries,
followed by albums of smaller
countries alphabetically (which of course excludes the
countries listed
separately).

this

prices after the auction or any time you want to speak to us
from
anywhere
in the UK for the cost of a local rate phone call.
uro Currency; We are happy to accept
Euro cash payments in our shop. We display our rate beside the
counter.
We
normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole
penny.
For
example, at the time of writing, the market rate is 0.9080, so
we are
allowing
90p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give
you).
You can
also pay for auction lots in Euro banknotes (postal customers
please
confirm
before sending). We also accept payments in our shop in Euros,
and we
buy many of the
old legacy currencies, as well as other coins and notes.
Most
auctions include a few lots which, due to their large size or
weight
compared
to value, will not be taken to the auction venue. They must
therefore
be viewed
at our shop during the previous week, and successful
purchasers will be
responsible for their collection from us. The symbol for these
is , and very generally
speaking,
there's a cut-off
point of about 2 or 3 estimate per kilo weight.
If you attend the auction and buy any of these lots, you can
either
call at the
shop during normal opening hours, or it is sometimes possible
to
arrange to
pick up after the auction has finished (though please first
speak to
Mr. Murray
to arrange this).
NORMAL BIDDING
STEPS
We
list here our normal bid steps for your information. This may
be of
help to bidders
who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit
our
normal
pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as
much as
possible,
but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to 20, bids are in 1 steps.
From 20 to 30, bids are in 2 steps.
>From 30 to 50, bids are in 2 or 3 steps
(i.e. 30, 32, 35, 38, 40, 42,
45, 48, 50).
>From 50 to 100 in 5 steps.
From 100 to 200,
bids are in 10 steps.
>From 200 to 300, bids are in 20 steps.
>From 300 to 500, bids are in 20 or 30,

above this in 5% to 10% steps.
