This is the web version of our normal printed paper catalogue. Some changes have been effected so as to save file space and transfer/download time. Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need.

The sale is arranged in the following order;

    Lots 117-162 Collectables (Non-Philatelic)
Lots 163-381 Lots by country A-Z, excluding U.K.

    Lots 382-485 United Kingdom
If you are new to our auctions, please see our general auction information page.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success (and are not normally sold at less than about two-thirds of estimate). Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post.
New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale.

              MEDALS etc.

148     Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 with three clasps – St. Domingo, Basque Roads
1809, and Java. Named to “
HENRY OGILVIE, MASTER’S MATE.”. The medal generally very
fine/extremely fine, the clasps are slightly bent and show a bit of wear, and only minor
edge knocks. The ribbon is quite dirty but probably original. This medal was recently
discovered under the floor of a house in
Edinburgh.
Henry Ogilvie joined the Navy in 1804, serving first on the Bacchante then the
Canopus.
Then while with the Donegal he was part of Nelson’s pursuit of the combined Spanish and
French fleets to the West Indies and back, and was wounded at the action off St. Domingo
(1806). In 1810 he was present at the destruction of enemy shipping in the Basque Roads.
His next ship was the Illustrious, during his time on which he took the rank of Master’s
Mate, followed by the Akbar, involved in the conquest of Java. Later ships were the

Doris, President, Nightingale, and Newcastle. He appears to have retired in 1817, aged
              25. His entitlement is confirmed by reference to the Naval General Service Medal Roll
              1793-1840
. [Viewing by appointment.]

149     Important Second World War group of three medals comprising 1939-1945 Star with Battle
of Britain clasp, Air Crew Europe Star, and War Medal 1939-45. These are still in the box
in which they were posted out to the recipient’s mother (remarried as Mrs. Walker) in 1951,
the clasp therefore still being loose.
All are in excellent as-issued condition. The Battle of Britain clasp has been checked to be
genuine, and shows the typical notch. These are accompanied by the certificate, naming the
              deceased as “Sergeant J. Wright”.
Sergeant Pilot John Wright was a pilot who joined the RAF in 1935, first as an Aircrafthand,
before applying to be a pilot. After training he went to 6 OTU at
Sutton Bridge in June 1940.
He then joined 79 Squadron after converting to Hurricanes. He saw service in North East
England, including the shared destruction of a He.111. His squadron was taken south to
Biggin Hill, and on 4 September 1940 his aircraft was hit by a Bf110. Injured, he flew
several miles, apparently aborted an attempted landing on a playing field when he saw
that children were playing there, and then crashed into a household garage in Surbiton. He
was removed from the wreckage but died in hospital next day. He was 24.
The lot also includes two further pairs of medals; WW1 standard pair named to 47984 Pte.
              R. Wright, North’d Fus. (died
28 April 1917, near Arras) (John Wright’s father); and

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Debit Card. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit or debit card instructions.
If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by card, and to have the lots posted.
We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where credit card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

Methods of payment accepted at auction;
Cash (Sterling, Euro notes)                              Cheque (from established customers)
Debit Card (no surcharge)                               Credit Card (no surcharge on UK accounts)

plus PayPal by arrangement (additional fee of 4% UK, 5% foreign)

If you are coming to the auction, please be aware that the Edinburgh Festival Fireworks Concert is happening at
Princes Street, starting at 9.00pm. This might have some impact on us;
> The afternoon viewing and earlier evening should be little affected, except that some people park their cars at this side of town and walk in to the centre.
> Any customers arriving during the auction should give themselves some extra time to drive or to use public transport – roads will be busy from about
7.30pm onwards.
> The car park at our venue is not open to the general public. If you have any problem getting a space in our parking area please come in and ask for guidance.
> Anybody still in the area will find the roads very busy after the fireworks finish. This will be from about
9.45pm.

>> Of course, you might want to fit in auction and fireworks !  The view from the clubhouse is pretty good.
>> >> see www.eif.co.uk/virginmoneyfireworks for details.

€uro Currency; We are happy to accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the time of writing, the market rate is 0.9098, so we are allowing 90p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for lots in this auction by Euro banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We also accept payments in our shop in Euros, and we buy the old “legacy” currencies, as well as other coins and notes.

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next auction is planned for mid-October 2017.
This auction is conducted according to the “Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale” (available if requested), with the exception of Clause 6, where “Scottish” should be substituted for “English”.
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing. Alternatives and limits are accepted.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 12% of the sale price, plus administration fee of £1.50 per lot + £6.50 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing. (Photocopies are available, at a minimal plus postage, or request scans by email.)
Remember the Buy or Bid
Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues is currently £7 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £9 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are European countries £12, Overseas £15.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 (mobile 07974 962649).
Open Bids (“Buy Bids”) are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.

Any invoices remaining unpaid fourteen days from the auction date (or after delivery to a postal buyer) will attract interest at the rate of 2% per month or part thereof.
