After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

Collections and Mixed Lots.

1     A world collection in three old and battered binders. At first sight, the collection looks
merely good, but studied attention reveals a steady stream of single stamps, sets, and part sets
which are better (and others which are not so much valuable as unusual). Seems to cover only
the period approx. 1900 to 1940. Majority used, but a fair number mint, and the condition
overall is fine. Certainly strongest in Europe, but still with useful ranges of Overseas and
      Commonwealth. (Some thousands of stamps) þ ..         ..           ..         ..          ..          ..          ..             £1,000 to £1,500.
2         An enormous accumulation/stock/clearance lot in three cartons. Consists of at least three
dozen albums/binders/stockbooks, further loose album pages, folders, stockleaves, stacks
of packets, and so on. Just a little in covers and cards. Bias is in foreign material, very little
      UK, some Commonwealth. (Many 1,000s) þ  ..         ..           ..          ..          ..          ..          ..          ..                       £240.
3         Not for the fainthearted, this carton is stuffed with pages, packets, and so on, with a huge
array of world stamps. Many hours of sorting. Apparently originally from a foreign source,
      there is a strong showing of Europe and Overseas. (1,000s) þ ..           ..          ..          ..          ..                              £200.
4         Quite a decent boxed remainder lot. Wide range – some common, some medium value, odd
better areas. Much is on stockleaves or in plastic wallets, partly sorted. Many pleasant little
      finds. (1,000s) þ ..           ..           ..          ..         ..           ..           ..            ..          ..          ..          ..                            £150.
5         Small carton with a world mix. Little cheap bulk, fair numbers of slightly better or selected
items on stockcards, in packets. Gets better on closer inspection. (Many 100s) þ            ..                                   £100.
6         A big bulky box with bundles of covers, packets of stamps, little stockbooks, a large album,
and so on. Definite German strength, followed by other European. þ  ..           ..          ..           ..                            £100.
7         Big heavy box with bundles of stockcards holding thousands of stamps with mixed duplic-
ation. Also others in tins, small stockbooks, etc. Mainly used Europe. þ           ..           ..          ..          ..                 £75.
8         Three loose leaf albums, three junior albums, a stockbook, and various packets, with a wide
      range of world stamps of mixed periods. (Many 100s) þ            ..           ..                ..          ..           ..                       £55.
9         This lot looks as though a Berlin collector’s “stamp room” has been swept out and put in a
box. Thousands of loose cheap stamps in packets, two old (1950s) Michel catalogues with
hundreds of stamps between the pages, some duplicated used world on stockcards (up to
      1970s), etc. Mixed periods. þ ..           ..           ..           ..           ..           ..          ..          ..          ..                                £50.
10         Carton with two cover albums of UK FDCs, two smaller cover albums of IoM FDCs, other
UK/IoM stamps, some UK packs (c. late 1960s/early 70s), and various other world odds.
      (100s) þ ..           ..           ..           ..          ..           ..           ..          ..          ..           ..          ..          ..                              £50.
11         Large accumulation (“guddle” would be kind) in large carton – loose stamps, small stock-
books, envelopes/packets, box of RAF covers, binders, junior albums, etc. (1,000s) þ           ..                                £50.
12         Mixed big box. Several shoeboxes of packets of USA, Hungary, Austria, UK and many
others. Although bulk is cheap stamps, by no means rubbish, and many odd bits to pick over.
      Another good sort. (Many 1,000s) þ ..         ..           ..           ..           ..          ..           ..            ..                                  £50.
13 Two plastic tubs with a duplicated stock of singles, sets/part sets made up in packets and pre-
sented ready for sale. Issues included up to 1970s – mint, used, and c.t.o., with many thema-
tics and much from the more prolific countries. Useful stock in the right hands. (1,000s) þ 50.
14 Carton of world stock/accum.; many 1,000s arranged in packets in small boxes, a big packet
of bundleware, some 100s of Canada perfins, a few UK company opts., kiloware, etc. Some
  countries well represented, others probably absent. þ .. .. .. 50.
15 Heavy carton; three large American printed albums with world ranges, plus ten other various
  albums/stockalbums. (1,000s) þ .. .. .. .. .. 50.
16 World remainders in two old fat and heavy Scott’s Junior albums, plus another fifteen mixed
albums, binders and stockalbums with varied contents. Much foreign, and nothing very
  modern. Heavy lot, worth ploughing through. (1,000s) þ  .. .. 50.
17 Large box of packets and envelopes. A collector’s accumulation from number of years back ?
Much common, some bits of interest. Many foreign. (1,000s) þ .. .. 40.
Please read the notes on the reverse of the bid form – they answer many queries !

and motoring memorabilia, tickets, beermats, musical (instruments, sheet music, records), books, advertising, art, and so on. We are willing to consider anything. However, please do not send things
to us without first checking their suitability. For administration purposes, we treat the Collectables

A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (vat-inclusive) will be added to all sale prices.

THE AUCTION VENUE is 650 metres West of our Shop, on Ferry Road. It has its own car park.
The bar (upstairs) is open 5-10pm and also serves a variety of food, teas and coffees. Please note that
we do not allow drinks at the viewing tables, but you are welcome to bring drinks down from the bar
once the auction has started.

**If you find time is tight to get bids posted in time, we are happy to accept bids by telephone, fax or email. Please always use first class post for sending bids.
**The notes on the reverse of the Bid Form form part of our terms of business - please read from time
to time. Explanations of our terms, principles, practices, etc. can be had simply by asking at any time.

€uro Currency; We are now happy to accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We display our rate beside the counter. We normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole penny (which is probably better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for auction lots in Euro banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We cannot yet take auction bids or cheques in Euros.

If you see any catalogue prices quoted here in €uros, this will be from the current Michel catalogues. This is done where the Gibbons listing is either out-of-date or lacking in detail.

If you are giving us your credit card details to pay for any purchases, please remember to include the “Security Code” (the last three black digits printed on the signature strip).

Posting things to us ?  Many people now find that when they go to their local Post Office, a boring
white printed label is used rather than postage stamps. Some Postmasters seem to give the impression
that there is no choice in the matter. Be advised that if you say you want traditional adhesive postage stamps before they start to weigh or process your package, they should be able to do this for you. And
of course, you can always use your own stamps (again, if you need them to tell you the price, make
sure that you tell them that you don’t want a label – before the package is processed).
This of course applies not just to material being posted to us, but to anybody. We have noticed recently
that some of the charities from which we buy kiloware are getting fewer stamps, and these in lesser
variety. Do your bit to help stamp collectors, dealers, and charities !

Our Own “Philatelic Bureau”
Fewer sub post offices are now keeping stocks of new stamps as they are issued. We have heard
reports from a number of customers backing this up. Are you aware that we operate a service under
which everything stocked by the Post Office Philatelic Bureau is also available from us at the same
price ?  So you can buy the new issues from our shop from the day of issue (and usually for the full
year after) at the same price as over a post office counter.

NORMAL BIDDING STEPS
We list here our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of help to bidders who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit our normal pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as much as possible, but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to £20, bids are in £1 steps. From £20 to £30, bids are in £2 steps.
From £30 to £50, bids are in £2 or £3 steps (i.e. £30, £32, £35, £38, £40, £42, £45, £48, £50).
From £50 to £100 in £5 steps. From £100 to £200, bids are in £10 steps.
From £200 to £300, bids are in £20 steps.
From £300 to £500, bids are in £20 or £30, and above this in 5% to 10% steps.

THIS IS HOW YOU CAN BID;
In Person. This is a public auction, and bids are made in the traditional manners.
Bids by post. Please use the Bid Form supplied, and send first class.
Telephone bids will be accepted at any time before the sale (but the earlier the better). These bids should be confirmed in writing, even if the written confirmation will not reach us until after the auction. A mobile number (07974 962649) can be called on the evening of sale only.
Fax bids should be sent to us on 0131.478 7021. Please use the bid form that comes with your auction catalogue. Our machine will be operative during our stated opening hours from now until
the date of the sale. As well as this, it will operate 24-hours from 10am on Saturday 23 August
until 3pm on Monday 25 August. Please do not fax bids to us after that time.
E-mail bids should be sent to us at [email protected] at any time from the moment you receive this catalogue until 3pm on Monday 25 August. Please do not e-mail bids to us after that
time. Please use the format and wording used on the bid form that comes with your auction
catalogue. (We have a back-up email address of [email protected] in case of problems.)

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Switch and Delta. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit card instructions. If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by credit card, and to have the lots posted.
We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Switch and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

VIEWING; please note that lots can normally be viewed in our shop during the one week prior to the auction. It is sometimes possible to view auction lots outside the normal times, but this must be by special arrangement.

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next stamp auction will be on 29 September 2003.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available
 if requested).
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 90p per lot + £4.25 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £4 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £4 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are EEC countries £4, other European countries £5, Overseas £8.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 or  0131.552 1515. On the evening of the sale only you can use our mobile telephone number 07974 962649 (at other times it is very seldom switched on, and we do not collect text messages or respond to "missed calls" on our mobile).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
