Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need. (The first few lots have been tidied up to nearer their original style just to give you a better impression.)

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/fax/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by fax, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, fax, or post.

COLLECTABLES AUCTION 11 NOVEMBER; suitable lots are now being accepted. All sorts of
items have been shown to sell – coins, postcards, cigarette and trade cards, and banknotes are “staple
foods” but our customers also have an appetite for artwork, golfing items, jewellery, musical instrum-
ents, books, militaria, cinema and pop/rock memorabilia, historic artefacts, and so on (and so on !).
Remember as a guide that as a vendor you are advised to sell no less than about £20 in one auction,
or to enter lots less than about £5/£10, or worth less than about £5/£10 per kilo. Note however that, for
administration purposes we treat this auction and the stamp sale the week before as one entity, and
only one “vendor fee” is charged, even if you have lots in both sales.

THE END OF THE SALE

© Robert Murray 2002
What are we up to ?
Apart from the shop being open as normal, and our auctions roughly one each month, we are also doing the following over coming months;

SCOTEX 2002 is again at the SECC in Glasgow, on Saturday 19 October (11am-6pm) and Sunday 20 October (11am-4.30pm). We will have our normal stand, but this year we make a more positive change to the goods we have on sale. For some years I have commented on the difficulty of taking a representation of all of our stocks to such events. We took about 2½ tons of stock to Glasgow 2000, but it was still not everything !  From now on, for both our annual Scottish events (Scotex and Congress) we will try to do one area of our stock well, and then a different aspect of our business will be taken to the next show, and so on.

** There is however a commitment we can make which slightly breaks that rule. We undertake to have a section of our stand, and all these events, offering material suitable for young or new collectors. This may not necessarily be the most profitable use of the space, but we believe it to be worth doing.

For Scotex 2002 we will be taking only our stock of covers. Between now and mid October we expect to add some thousands of covers to our stocks – all types – postal history, commercial, first day, and philatelic – and of all countries.

Now here is something that should be unpopular with our fellow standholders, but will hopefully go down well with collectors attending Scotex; nothing will go on sale until 11am on the Saturday !!!  Nobody will be given access to view our stocks until the doors open to the public. Everybody will get the same chance at the new stock.

CHESTER 2002 is the follow-on from Glasgow 2000, and is the national show held every two years, each time at a new UK location. It will be at Chester Racecourse on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th November. Robert Murray Stamp Shop will be there. We will probably only take some selected items of stock, rather than our usual vanful, but being so far from home we hope to meet many of our postal customers. We will be doing our best to make sales, attract some new customers, and we will also be happy to accept material for inclusion in future auction sales.

THE AUCTION VENUE is 700 yards West of our Shop, on Ferry Road. It has its own car park.
The bar (upstairs) is open 6-10pm and also serves a variety of food, teas and coffees. Please note that
we do not allow drinks at the viewing tables, but you are welcome to bring drinks down from the bar
once the auction has started.

* If you find time is tight to get bids posted in time, we are happy to accept bids by telephone, fax or email. Please always use first class post for sending bids.
** The notes on the reverse of the Bid Form form part of our terms of business - please read from time
to time. Explanations of our terms, principles, practices, etc. can be had simply by asking at any time.
* A Buy or Bid Sale will be held as normal - see back of Bid Form for details.

There is no VAT added to the price of lots, no handling charge to buyers, and no fee for using credit or debit cards; simply the buyer’s premium of 10% (and postage at cost when goods are sent out to clients).

NORMAL BIDDING STEPS
We list here our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of help to bidders who are unable to

Telephone bids will be accepted at any time before the sale (but the earlier the better). These bids should be confirmed in writing, even if the written confirmation will not reach us until after the auction. A mobile number (07974 962649) can be called on the evening of the sale only.
Fax bids should be sent to us on 0131.478 7021. Please use the bid form that comes with your auction catalogue. Our machine will be operative during our stated opening hours from now until the date of the sale. As well as this, it will operate 24-hours from 10am on Saturday 24 August until 3pm on Monday 26 August. Please do not fax bids to us after that time.
E-mail bids should be sent to us at [email protected] at any time from the moment you receive this catalogue until 3pm on Monday 26 August. Please do not e-mail bids to us after that time. Please use the format and wording used on the bid form that comes with your auction
catalogue. (We have an alternative email of [email protected] if you have any problems. .)

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Switch and Delta. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit card instructions. If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by credit card, and to have the lots posted.

We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Switch and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

Coming to the auction ?
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - you can bring things along for sale on the night. We charge 25p per
lot entry fee, and 10% commission on sales (1% optional insurance).
All sorts of things sell well - single stamps, sets, country collections, empty albums, mixed boxes,
and so on. If you have a number of lots to enter you can pick up a supply of forms from the shop in
advance.
Lots can be entered for the Buy or Bid Sale in advance at our shop, by appointment. Small lots (single stamps, sets, single covers or cards, etc; i.e. that will fit on one of our standard large forms) are charged at the normal 25p entry fee, but any lots larger than this are charged £1 each entry. (The 25p entry still applies to larger lots if they are entered for sale on the night.)

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next stamp auction will be on 30 September 2002.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available
 if requested).
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 90p per lot + £4.25 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £4 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £4 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are EEC countries £4, other European countries £5, Overseas £8.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 or  0131.552 1515. On the evening of the sale only you can use our mobile telephone number 07974 962649 (at other times it is very seldom switched on, and we do not collect text messages or respond to "missed calls" on our mobile).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
