Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success (and are not normally sold at less than about two-thirds of estimate). Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.
After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.
This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.
NEW BIDDERS;

Collections
and
Mixed Lots.
1 Entertaining and
noteworthy collection in springback album. This covers the
whole world
and is largely composed of individual items a
collector has purchased over a number of years,
with a bias to older Commonwealth, but with other
Europe and Overseas included, and inc-
luding many forgeries and reprints (which are noted
as such). Some examples inc. India 1965
10r printed on gummed side, Victoria (Australia) KE7
1 perforated OS c.t.o., Newfound-
land 1861 1/- m.m., nine Scinde Dawk forgeries,
Gambia 1922 4/- (3 different perfs) m.m.,
UK 1858 1d red plate 188 mint sixblock, 1d red with
OUS opt., 1840 penny blacks (6) and
twopence blue (1), NZ 1971 18c Maori Club u.m. with
major black shift, British Virgin
Islands 1937 Coronation set perforated SPECIMEN, and so forth. Interesting lot, with
much
useful. Mainly fine, but some faults or poorer
mounting. (100s)

2 Small box with
bundle of stockcards of selected items mixed Commonwealth,
and Overseas. Each card generally catalogued pounds,
or tens, sometimes hundreds.

3 Old and broken
ledger used as an album, with almost everything being 19th
and early 20th
Century (mainly up to about 1920). Typically mixed
condition, and had had some picking
at some time, but with interest throughout and inc.
some fiscals, postal stationery, etc.
$2, $5, $10, $20. Postal stationery inc. some
China/Indo-China area. (c.3,500)

4 An attractive
and entertaining mint (tiny number of used) world collection
in four binders
of Hagner/Prinz pages. The strength is in the
disparity and coverage, the bulk of stamps
from very roughly 1890s to 1960s (though earlier and
later included), with examples of
many territories not often seen (e.g.
seldom the commonest stamps, and often worth a few
pounds per country (usually at least
a pound or two). (c.3,000+) ..

5 Interesting
world collection in two cartons. General ranges without much
modern, with
strength in France, but with better items/sets here
and there throughout . . . BUT the
coll-
ection has been damp, leaving some mould, and many
mint stamps stuck down (some
solidly, others removing with caution). A worthwhile
lot, but quite a serious project for
somebody. (1,000s)

(some fuller/emptier) of mainly mint stamps, generally quite
modern,
of Commonwealth, Europe, and Overseas mixed countries

flowers, etc.), some less common areas.

Commonwealth countries,

interesting, or less commonly seen.

While we
prefer not to take in future auction lots actually at the
auction (weve got enough to do !) we understand that it
makes sense for some people to do so. But please, if you
are delivering auction material to us at the auction, mark
up your packages with your vendor reference number. If you
dont have a number please call us in advance of the sale
day so that we can give you one.
It is a
while since we printed this notice in our catalogue, but
it needs to be repeated from time to time;
We are the only people who should be doing business in or
at the auction premises. We do not allow any other
business without our express permission. We know that
people often take the opportunity of meeting at our
auction to carry out small sales or exchanges, and we
don't generally have any problem with that, as long as we
are asked. Otherwise no approaches should be made to other
customers with a view to making sales or soliciting
business. On pain of death. (Well, actually, probably on
pain of a slightly embarrassing telling-off, but at very
worst a ban.)

bids or to check on prices after the auction or any time you
want to speak to us from anywhere in the UK for the cost of a
local rate phone call.
uro Currency; We are happy to accept
Euro cash payments in our shop. We normally allow the market
rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the
time of writing, the market rate is 0.8252, so we are allowing
82p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give
you). You can also pay for lots in this auction by Euro
banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We
also accept payments in our shop in Euros, and we buy the old legacy
currencies, as well as other coins and notes.
MATERIAL IS ACCEPTED FOR FUTURE SALES AT ANY TIME
Most auctions include a
few lots which, due to their large size or weight compared to
value, will not be taken to the auction venue. They must
therefore be viewed at our shop during the previous week, and
successful purchasers will be responsible for their collection
from us. The symbol for these is , and very generally
speaking, there's a cut-off point of about 2 or 3 estimate
per kilo weight.
If you attend the auction and buy any of these lots, you can
either call at the shop during normal opening hours, or it is
sometimes possible to arrange to pick up after the auction has
finished (though please first speak to Mr. Murray to arrange
this).
NORMAL BIDDING STEPS
We list here
our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of help
to bidders who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit
our normal pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as
much as possible, but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to 20, bids are in 1 steps.
From 20 to 30, bids are in 2 steps.
>From 30 to 50, bids are in 2 or 3 steps (i.e. 30,
32, 35, 38, 40, 42, 45, 48, 50).
>From 50 to 100 in 5 steps.
From 100 to 200,
bids are in 10 steps.
>From 200 to 300, bids are in 20 steps.
>From 300 to 500, bids are in 20 or 30, and above this
in 5% to 10% steps.
Abbreviations;
a list of abbreviations and symbols used is from time to
time included in the auction catalogue. We suggest that you

CREDIT
CARDS
We are happy to accept
MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments
by Maestro and Delta. This facility can be used by room
purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other
local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by
postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been
designed to make space for credit card instructions.
If you want your purchases charged in this way, please
complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete
these details unless you want to pay by debit/credit card, and to have the lots posted.
We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to
absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and
therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this
facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in
advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card
details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard), plus cost of
posting receipt slip.
VIEWING; please note that lots can normally be viewed in our
shop during the one week prior to the auction. It is
sometimes possible to view auction lots outside the normal times,
but this must be by special arrangement.
